We found Felix Mory three months after his first win on the Challenge Tour at the Dormy Open (Sweden). How did he process this victory? How does he feel about the end of the season? We asked him the question:
I am in England, close to Cambridge, for the British Challenge which takes place on The Belfry course near Birmingham (from 02/09 to 05/09). It is a fantastic place that has hosted the Ryder Cup 4 times! It is a long course, with very dry fairways but a little too wide for my preference. The greens are dry and fast. Yesterday I played the traditional Pro-Am and tomorrow is the first round. Right now I am on the putting green, doing a chipping session.
Comment: Unfortunately, Felix did not make the cut with a score of +4. See you in Germany for the Big Green Egg German Challenge.
I will spend lots of time on the putting green. You have to learn the speed of the green and the way in which they react to approach shots. It is the same thing with the rough, I test out different things to understand how to play the ball, how much power to put behind it and how much spin the ball takes. The differences are even more noticeable in the bunkers. Each course has its own sand. To perform better, I have to adjust my technique depending on the course
That has been quite complicated. I did not play very well in the tournaments that followed. I think that I had too many expectations after my win. I was put under a little too much pressure, I was too impatient with the course, too demanding and I had so much hope to do well.
Yes, I had a good tournament, a bit frustrating though. In the last round, I was 1 shot ahead with 9 holes to go, I was managing well considering the windy conditions. But it didn’t happen, it’s golf. It’s a shame as after a win, I would have been very well positioned in the overall classification of the Road to Mallorca. It is still fifth place which carries big points.
Last week, I also had a good start in Holland, I was third after the first 2 holes but then I didn’t play as well in the last two holes. You must see the positives, every time you build up more experience. You have to go through these experiences to get to know yourself so that you can deal with them better when they arise.
It is another peculiar year, the tournaments planned in China have been cancelled so we will play in Spain instead. There are no cards either so everyone keeps their category for 2022. After that, the goal is always to be in the Top 20 of the Road to Mallorca so that I move up to the European Tour with the best possible place and have a good category. The top 45 players of the Challenge Tour play in the last tournament in Majorca, there are big points to be won.
