The polo shirt is the symbolic clothing of golf. It’s also the best-seller from Inesis’s clothing range. So it’s a very special project when it comes to updating it. The design team have worked on it for more than 2 years with one sole idea in mind: a polo shirt designed to last.
A material that lasts hinges on the design of a strong thread. By mixing cotton and polyester, we have improved how well the product lasts over time and retains its original colour, compared to a 100% cotton thread.
The MW500 polo shirt has been designed with 60% BCI cotton (Better Cotton Initiative) and 40% recycled polyester. By recycling plastic bottles or clothing to produce our polyester, we reduce the use of oil-derived resources, all while preserving the material’s quality of use during your activities.
We have increased the MW500 polo shirt’s fabric weight up to 235g/m2. That’s 24% more than the polo shirt that it’s replacing. If this doesn’t speak to you, that means it holds well and not just when it first comes out.
Designing polo shirts isn’t new to us. We know the points of weakness and wear. the bottom of the buttoning, the slits, the collar no longer holding, the ribbing being stretched, etc.
We have reinforced all of these points and doubled the most important stitching.
A polo shirt is a very codified clothing item. It has a quilted knit, a signature collar, and a classic cut. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We wanted an elegant and timeless polo shirt. The collar is ribbed with two buttons on the button strip, a rib edge at the ends of the sleeves for an exemplary finish, slits at the bottom of the polo shirts. Simple, effective, timeless. This is also the idea behind “designed to last”, that the MW500 polo shirt won’t give in to the rules of fashion.
The colour development for the MW500 polo shirt was conducted through lab tests in accordance with Decathlon standards.
At Decathlon, we have developed a catalogue of colours. There are multiple ways to achieve the same colour. What varies is the “dye recipe.” We have worked on recipes that allow us to get a precise durable colour.
The MW500 polo shirt is available in 15 colours. That's right! There is something for everyone, and for every occasion: the essentials that never get old and colours that work well with your trousers and shorts no matter what you’re feeling each day.
We conducted a study of 172 golfers to ask them what a polo shirt’s durability means to them. What massively stood out is that their polo shirts wore out not when they wore them, but when they put them in the washing machine. That’s the real test. Our MW500 polo shirt have been prepared to champion this challenge. To approve the last prototype, we put it through the wash 100 times. Every 10 washes, we measured 3 things:
The new MW500 polo shirt is 30% tougher than its predecessor. That’s also how we’ve made a more durable product.
No need to puts loads of detergent, it’s already very concentrated. That will make both your polo shirt and your washing machine last the longest! The best way to dry it is to air dry and go up and down with the clothing iron, while inside out.
