Monday 13th December, 9 am Inesis Golf Park (Marcq-en-Baroeul / France). The final wood and hybrid 900 are assembled and ready to play. There are the 3 hybrid /19°, 3-wood /15°, 10° drivers, all mounted in two sizes (Sizes 1 and 2) on shafts for slow, medium or fast swing speeds.
We head off to the Belle Dune golf course at Fort Mahon, in France. It is situated on the Côte d'Opale, in France, approximately 2h15 from our Inesis Golf Park design centre. Why go there? Well, because it is one of the region's golf courses that are still playable in mid-December. We are not making it up: "Tucked away in the centre of Europe's most beautiful range of dunes, a stone's throw from the beach, the Belle Dune golf course is one of the best golf destinations."
Julien, assistant club product manager, and Clément, field testing engineer, explain: "the day's objective is to make progress with the hybrid and wood 900 validation process. We need to challenge the design team's beliefs and the results of our first tests with advanced golfers feedback (golf handicap <15) on their golf course."
The 9 testers (8 men and one woman) have a golf handicap of between 7 and 14 and an average age of approximately 50 years old. It is exactly who we are targeting with the clubs 900, intended for advanced golf players (handicap < 15). It supplements well the tests we took the opportunity to do with younger golfers and ranked between 0 and 5.
They are also all members of the Association Sportive of the Belle Dune golf course, and they, subsequently, know the golf course by heart. It is a very important given that the aim is, in particular, to have points of comparison with the distances they are used to hitting.
The 9 testers started with hitting balls in the driving range to warm up, then they went one by one in front of Clément and his Trackman's watchful eye. We were able to measure everyone's driver swing speed and compare their performance using their equipment and the clubs 900.
These initial results allowed Julien to provide testers with clubs suitable to their swing speeds (slow, medium or fast).
They then headed off around the course for a round where the aim was to hit the driver 900, 3 wood 900 and 3 hybrid 900 as much as possible.
We got quite a bit of data out of this test. But what was of most interest to us was putting words to feelings, and not just getting the numbers. Qualitative rather than quantitative information.
We got some very good feedback about the finishing, and the quality of the shafts. The testers were thrilled by the 3 wood and hybrid 900, which they found very nice and easy to play with. As for the driver 900, performances were on par, but some of the testers found the shafts too heavy. We did indeed select heavier and stiffer shafts for the driver 500. This test will, therefore, allow us to fine-tune the shaft's features, especially for the medium and slow swing speeds that were mainly represented among the testers.
