At Inesis, just when every golfer was impatiently waiting for spring, the sun and the return of warmer temperatures, one guy – image leader Damien – was looking for somewhere he could find winter conditions in April. Why? Because he’d been tasked with photographing the products set for release in autumn-winter 2022. Interview.
I was looking for cold, rain and wind. Basically, autumnal or winter conditions. In summer, we go to southern Europe. In winter, the North. And if there’s one country where golf is king in northern Europe, it’s the UK. I was particularly interested in Scotland because the landscape is so varied, with the sea, hills and forests.
You really feel like you’re in golf country. In the St Andrews region, there were 30 courses less than 30 minutes from where we were based. There’s also a touch of soul that the image of Scotland leaves you with. You’re in a place that’s full of almost sacred history. All those old low stone walls and huge, intimidating buildings have seen golfers pass by for generations. In Scotland, golf is also extremely popular and accessible, which is similar to the approach we want to offer at Inesis.
The work starts several months in advance. Firstly to ensure we had all the right products in time for the photo shoot, i.e. around 30 different items. Then to put together the team that would be present during the shoot. In Scotland, we had two golfers (a man and a woman), 2 photographers, 1 video maker and drone pilot, and 1 assistant director.
Then we needed to locate all the golf courses where we’d be shooting and get their permission. This was the most stressful part because nothing was certain before we got there. But the Scots gave us such a warm welcome. They left the doors of their golf courses wide open for us.
Finally, before leaving I ascertained all the photo and video requirements of the brand in order to find out exactly what I had to shoot, which still left a bit of room for improvisation, and this was important because we were looking to capture sincere and authentic pictures.
