After a 2020 season that was cut short, and a long winter preparation period, our partner Félix Mory took off for the United States to take part in 3 preparatory tournaments, before the opening of the Challenge Tour season. Safe to say, he made the right choice to go out there!
Félix feels pretty at home State-side. After sixth-form, he decided to head out to Los Angeles to continue his studies, while rubbing shoulders with the best university-level golfers. He quickly became a leading fixture in his university team (CSUN), and won several tournaments. Returning to France with his degree in-hand, he decided to take the plunge and go pro in 2019, and signed up for the Pro Golf Tour (European 3rd Division), where his excellent results promoted him to the Challenge Tour for 2020 and 2021.
Covid-19 then stepped onto the scene, and the beginning of the Challenge Tour season, which was going to be hosted in South Africa at the end of February, was postponed until April. The final tournament played by Félix being the Open de Roissy in October 2020, it was entirely out of the question that Félix would take on the Challenge Tour without preparation.
After a winter spent on training hard in Munich, then in Portugal when the winter weather set in across the Rhine, Félix needed to find some tournaments to get back into the swing of things (pardon the pun). The choice of the Golden State Tour was obvious. It was a chance for Félix to head out to springtime conditions, amongst a competitive set of players, with decent grants, not to mention a chance to catch up with some university pals!
During the first tournament, Félix quickly topped the leaderboard in the first round. An excellent start. He finished 11th, at -5. Next stop: the Soboba Springs course for the second tournament. Back in the swing of things, Félix was 4 places away from top after the second round, but just missed an opportunity at the putting, which stopped him making a spot in the finals. He finished in 21st place. This American mini-tour came to an end at Temecula Creek, where Félix put on a stunning performance. The first two rounds were secured with two cards at -4. Three players found themselves in the final round at -8. This time, Félix's putting was on point, and with a final round at -7, Félix brought the day to a close with 2 tee shots in advance for victory. The first victory since he went pro, we’re sure this is the first of many!
Next stop: Munich. 2 or 3 days of golf-free rest, then training will begin again. At the end of March, Félix will be at the Inesis Golf Park, shooting the autumn/winter 2021 collection. This will give him a chance to see his Belgian coach, Jérôme Theunis, and to revisit the course where it all started for him: at Golf du Sart in Villeneuve d’Ascq.
As for the first rounds in South Africa, along with the Challenge Tour and the Sunshine Tour, nothing is yet certain. Apart from the issue of Covid-19, the player set has been reduced, and Félix will need an invitation to take part. More to come.
In any case, we can certainly say that this 2021 season couldn’t be off to a better start!
