The mid-season mark has passed on the Challenge Tour. This is a good opportunity for us to review with our partner Félix Mory the beginning of the year and to learn more about his mindset for the upcoming tournaments.
I trained throughout the winter, including 3 weeks in Faro, Portugal, in order to enjoy good playing conditions. I focused a lot on my putting, reading the greens in particular. I need to sink more putts from 3 metres. The swing too, of course, and quite a lot of wedging.
The last 2021 tournament was held in early November with the final in Spain. I resumed on February 10th, with a 4-tournament tour in South Africa. It's always a difficult time to return to competition because you need to get back into the swing of things. It was also necessary to adapt to the conditions that are different from those in Europe: the grass is more "tropical", really thick, the balls sink deeper into the rough, and there are tournaments at altitude where the ball travels 10% further. The result was 4 cuts, a 13th place, and a 49th place. My golf was okay, although I was rather disappointed with the results.
That has been quite frustrating. We played in Spain under the most dreadful conditions! There was an enormous amount of wind, with gusts of 80 km/h. It was very complicated for everyone. The cut was at +7 and I missed it by one stroke. Then in Scotland, I had a bad week. In the Czech Republic, I finished 41st. It was a course I really like, quite long, which suits my game well. It's where I hit my best shot of the year so far: it was a 9-iron shot at 165 m that dropped into the hole for an eagle and -7 on that round!
In Brittany, my game looked good, yet I didn't manage to produce my desired result. I took out my frustration on the drive contest organised by the Challenge Tour on hole no. 1. With a long-drive driver of 47 inches and a 5° loft, I managed to send the ball 337 metres!
Next, the Italian Open is a bit of a major for us, the prize money increased from €250,000 to €350,000. I had a very good week. I was -7 after 2 rounds, 2 shots off the lead. Unfortunately, I putted poorly on the last day. It's a course where the greens are extremely steep, more so than on any other golf course. The weather was 40°C all week and on the last day, the greens were slower than usual because they had been watered extensively. On a course like that, once you haven't got the right speed, you pay for it dearly.
I feel a bit disappointed with my results. I experienced a lot of frustration and self-doubt. I missed some cuts by only one or two strokes, and that took a toll on my confidence. After missing a cut, you tend to play the next tournament a little bit tighter, which is not good. I sometimes was too focused on the consequences of the shots I was playing rather than staying in the moment. But hey, that's golf, you have to take those moments, learn from them, and stay positive.
In terms of my game, I check my stats after each tournament. I can make very good putts from 2 metres, but I need to improve my performance between 3 and 6 metres. Overall, I feel my game has improved, although my bad shots need to be less bad. (editor's note: his average score improved from 71.56 to 70.73).
My objective remains to break into the top 20 of the Challenge Tour at the end of the season, to play the final in Spain, and to move up to the DP World Tour. You have to make it to the top 5, that's what pays off.
I played in Austria, finishing 28th at -1, and then a tournament in Munich. I hesitated to do so because I played 5 weeks of tournaments in a row. I was starting to get a bit worn out physically. However, as it was only 50 minutes from where I live and I could go home in the evening - which is always nice - I thought it would be a bit silly not to play. I decided to approach it in a fairly relaxed state of mind, not spending all my time on the course from Monday to Wednesday, and it worked out well for me. My game was solid. I had a decent first round with very solid putting. Overall it was my best putting week of the year. I was -7 before the weekend. I was really happy with my last round where I played -3 on the last 5 holes, enabling me to try and get a top 5 (4th place at -12).
Now I'm in Finland, where I want to put in a big month of August in the Nordic countries - Finland, Denmark, and then Sweden, all of which are tournaments I enjoy. (Felix won the Dormy Open in Sweden in 2021).
