The IronsThese clubs are used mainly for shorter shots than woods, and for approach shots to the green. Generally, you can play all shots with irons. The king of the irons is the 7, which gives the best playing compromise and is often the preferred iron for novices because of its versatility.
There are 9 irons, numbered 1 to 9.
Irons 1 to 4 are long with a closed loft.
Numbers 5 to 8 are average irons.
Number 9 is a short iron.

Between 16° and 48°
For long distances, long irons with closed lofts are better.
Choose an oversize head for a bigger sweetspot, which is more comfortable to play. Choose a midsize head for better use in the rough and bunkers.
A wide sole makes it easier to lift the ball.
A narrow sole gives a tighter trajectory
A multi-component steel head gives optimum power.
Forged steel and/or a moulded-forged assembly for a softer feel.

The woodsWoods are mostly used for distance shots, for teeing off and on the fairway.
Woods used to be made from wood, and you can recognise them from the large head, which is fairly round. A driver is a number 1 wood. It has the biggest club head. This club is used for teeing off.

The round sole means the club passes over the ground more smoothly, even in the rough or for bunker shots.

The wedgesThese clubs are mostly used for approach shots or bunker shots. They give a short, high shot.
There are three types of wedge:

Choose a forged steel and/or moulded-forged assembly for a softer feel.

The puttersThese clubs are used on the green for putting shots. They vary in weight. The slower the green, the heavier your putter should be.
A classic putter has peripheral weight, and is forgiving for off-centre shots. The head remains at right angles to the putt, and offers more accuracy.

There is another type of putter:
- A Mallet and an oversize Mallet: Very forgiving because of the superior inertia and peripheral weighting. The size of the head gives a natural swing movement.
If you tend to send the ball to the left, choose a center shaft.
An offset is better if you tend to overshoot to the right.
